He [Rabbi Tarfon] would say: |
It is not upon you to finish the work |
ולא אתה בן חורין ליבטל ממנה | but you are not free to withdraw from it; |
אם למדת תורה הרבה | if you learn much Torah |
נותנין לך שכר הרבה | they will give you much reward; |
ונאמן הוא בעל מלאכתך | your employer is reliable |
שישלם לך שכר פעולתך | to pay you the rewards of your efforts; |
ודע מתן שכרן של צדיקים | and know that the reward paid to the righteous |
לעתיד לבוא | is in the World to Come." |

|
Akaviah ben Mehalalel said: |
Contemplate three things |
ואין אתה בא לידי עבירה | and you will not come to sin. |
Know from where you come, |
ולאן אתה הולך | to where you go |
ולפני מי | and before Whom |
אתה עתיד ליתן דין וחשבון | you are fated to give a judgment and accounting. |
From where you came, |
מטפה סרוחה | a rancid drop; |
ולאן אתה הולך | to where you go, |
למקום רמה ותולעה | to a place a worms and maggots |
ולפני מי | and before Whom |
אתה עתיד ליתן דין וחשבון | you are fated to give a judgment and accounting, |
לפני מלך מלכי המלכים | before the King who rules kings, |
הקדוש ברוך הוא | the Holy One Blessed is He." |
