רבי מאיר אומר | Rabbi Meir says, |
הוי ממעט בעסק | "Limit your trade |
ועסוק בתורה | and engage in Torah; |
והוי שפל רוח | be humble |
בפני כל אדם | before every man; |
ואם בטלת מן התורה | if you idle yourself from Torah |
יש לך בטלים הרבה כנגדך | there will be many causes of idleness against you; |
ואם עמלת בתורה | and if you endeavor with Torah |
יש לו שכר הרבה ליתן לך | He has much reward to give you." |

פרק ד משנה יא |
|
רבי אליעזר בן יעקב אומר | Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov says, |
העושה מצוה אחת |
"One who fulfills one commandment |
קונה לו פרקליט אחד | acquires for himself one advocate, |
והעובר עבירה אחת | and one who transgresses one transgression |
קונה לו קטיגור אחד | acquires for himself one accuser; |
תשובה ומעשים טובים | repentance and good deeds |
כתריס לפני הפרענות | are like a shield before calamity." |
רבי יוחנן הסנדלר אומר | Rabbi Yochanan the cobbler says, |
כל כניסה שהיא לשם שמים |
"Every assembly that is for the sake of Heaven |
סופה להתקים | ultimately will endure, |
ושאינה לשם שמים | and those that are not for the sake of Heaven |
אין סופה להתקים | will not ultimately endure." |
