פרק ה משנה ב
עשרה דורות א [There were] ten generations א
מאדם ועד נח from Adam to Noah
להודיע to show
כמה ארך אפים לפניו how much forbearance is before him,
שכל הדורות as all the generations
היו מכעיסין ובאין would increasingly anger [God]
עד שהביא עליהם until He brought upon them
את מי המבול the waters of the Flood.
עשרה דורות ב [There were] ten generations ב
מנח ועד אברהם from Noah to Abraham
להודיע to show

כמה ארך אפים לפניו

how much forbearance is before him,
שכל הדורות as all the generations
היו מכעיסין ובאין would increasingly anger [God]

עד שבא אברהם

until Abraham came
וקבל שכר כלם and accepted all of their reward.

א    These were the generations of: (i) אדם; (ii) שת; (iii) אנוש; (iv) קינן; (v) מהללאל; (vi) ירד; (vii) חנוך; (viii) מתושלח; (ix) למך; and (x) נח.

ב    These were the generations of: (i) שם; (ii) ארפחשד; (iii) שלח; (iv) עבר; (v) פלג; (vi) רעו; (vii) שרוג; (viii) נחור; (ix) תרח; and (x) אברהם.

ג    According to רע"ב, these were (i) being thrown in the כבשן האש by נמרוד; (ii) being commanded to leave his home in חרן at the beginning of פרשת לך לך for ארץ כנען; (iii) the famine he encountered there; (iv) the kidnapping of Sarah by Pharaoh; (v) his battling the four kings who had captured לוט;  (vi) his prophesy at מעמד בן הבתרים of the future oppression of his descendants; (vii) ברית מילה; (viii) the kidnapping of Sarah by Avimelech; (ix) being commanded to banish Hagar and Yishmael; and (x) עקידת יצחק.  However, there are other accountings of these 10 trials:  רש"י and חידושי הגר"א, citing פרקי דרבי אלעזר say that the first of these tests was actually the persecution of אברהם by נמרוד and other for thirteen years during which אברהם was forced to hide literally underground, and which occurred sometime prior to the trial of the כבשן האש, but omit the kidnapping of Sarah by Avimelech; רמב"ם lists both his marriage to Hagar and his enstrangement from Yishmael each as a trial, and does not count the כבשן האש or the prophesy at the ברית בין הבתרים; according to תפארת ישראל we count the banishment of Yishmael as an additional trial but not Sarah's second abduction; and רבינו יונה lists the ordeal of the burial of Sarah as his final trial, and omits his prophesy at the ברית בין הבתרים
