A stone (fixed to the ground with clay next to a cooking vessel)

that (a pot) was set upon it for cooking

and on a tanur (a fire was built between the stone and oven, and the pot was placed on top of the two of them to cook over that fire),

[or] on it and on a kirah,

[or] on it and on a kupach (a hybrid of a tanur and a kirah),

is tamei (when fixed to the ground in such a manner, it is deemed a part of the cooking vessel);

[If there is no oven, but the pot be cooked over a fire by being put] on it (a stone that was fixed to the ground with clay) and on [another] stone (that is not set in place with clay),

on it and on the bedrock (i.e. stone that was never moved from the ground since its creation),

on it and on a wall,

it is tahor,

and this is the kirah of the (special chamber for the) nazirim

that was in Jerusalem (in the Temple, where they would cook their special offering brought at the end of their period of nezirus)

that was [made in this manner, with one stone resting next to] the bedrock (this was used in the as a precaution to keep these stoves, which were infrequently used, from becoming tamei).

The kirahs of the butchers:

בזמן שהוא נותן אבן

when he places one stone

alongside [another] stone (this cooking apparatus was made of multiple blocks of stone fixed parallel to each other with clay on the ground, or with clay to each other, there was place for separate fires between each stone; a pot would be cooked over each fire by resting it on two of the blocks),

if one of them (many say this means if one pair of these stones) become tamei

all them do not become tamei.

Three stones

that were made into two kirahs (by being fixed in parallel to the ground or each other with clay),

if one of the outer ones becomes tamei,

[the part of] the middle one

that serves the tamei (i.e. the part of the stone that supports a pot whose other side is supported by the opposite stone that was tamei)

is tamei,

that which serves the tahor

is tahor.

If the tahor [stone] is removed

the middle is held to be to be completely tamei;

if the tamei is removed

the middle is held to to be completely tahor.

If the two outer ones became tamei,

if the middle one was large

assign to this one enough to set on it for cooking from here

and to this one enough to set on it for cooking from here,

and the rest is tahor (i.e. only those parts of the middle stone necessary to support the pots is tamei);

and if it was small,

it is entirely tamei;

If the middle stone was removed (after both kirahs comprised of these three stones became tamei),

if one could set for cooking on it [the stove comprised of the remaining two stones]

a large kettle,

it is tamei;

if [the middle stone] was returned (most say that this refers to the above scenario where the other two stones could have supported a large kettle, and now the middle stone is returned and fixed in place with clay, rendering it now unusable for such a kettle)

it is tahor.

If it was coated with clay

it is susceptible to tumah

when it is heated

sufficiently to cook on it the egg [that was referred to in 5:2].

(Some say that this refers to any stone being used as a stove, and that while ordinarily they need not be heated to this degree, when covered in clay it is required.  Others say this refers to the previous case of the replaced middle stone, and that it means that only after it is cemented in place and all the stones have been heated will they become susceptible to tumah.)
